The term 'History of Art' refers to the history of the visual arts. It ties to cover the broad history of one of the fine arts, performing arts and literature. At times, the term also include theory of the visual arts, including aesthetics.
The history of art is an attempt to study and evaluate art throughout human history. The topic can be divided into different concepts such as Ancient Art, Medieval Western Art , Renaissance Western Art, Eastern Art and Modern & Contemporary Art.
Prior to the Renaissance, the concept of "art" didn't exist, so the study of Art History is a relatively new phenomenon. Over the years, the historians involved in art have come up with different views on the topic. Hence, what was once considered as a simple masterpiece is now considered as an economic, social and cultural manifestation of the artist's view.
