Theater
Theater is one of the important branches under performing arts. It has been derived from the Ancient Greek (theatron) which means "the seeing place." The shared experience between actor and audiences are often termed as theater. It is a popular form of storytelling. Over the years, theater has undergone many changes and forms. It uses different speech, gesture, music and visual arts into a single artistic form.
Theater encourages students to explore themselves and their world through creative drama. Students who join a theater get to develop their thinking and learning skills by imitating, speaking, moving and sharing. These programs provide students with opportunities to express and understand themselves in a better way. They also get to improve personal discipline. The dramatic activities help students to participate more independently and define their personal space.
Theater can be classified into three broad categories:
- Drama - In this branch of theater, written text or improvised speech is of paramount importance. Some of its common examples are English drama of William Shakespeare and Moliere French drama.
- Musical Theater - Both music and theater share a very close association. In this form of theater, music, dance and spoken dialogues are combined. It was introduced in the early 20th century and was known as "Modern Musical Theater."
- Comedy - There are only certain theater production which can be termed as comedies. Stan-up comedy also falls under this head.
